Homemade Ayran served in a glass jar with a bamboo straw, lightly foamy on top and paired with fresh lemon slices on a colorful woven cloth.

Easy 3-Ingredient Homemade Ayran (Turkish Yogurt Drink)

Ready in just a few minutes, this Homemade Ayran is an easy, 3-ingredient yogurt drink that helps restore electrolytes naturally.

It’s a simple, no-cook option—perfect for hot days, post-workout recovery, or as a refreshing balance to hearty meals.

Welcome to Mikki’s Kitchen, my fellow food-lovers!

Today, I’m sharing a recipe that’s incredibly popular in places like Turkey: Ayran. This refreshing drink combines plain or Greek yogurt with water and a pinch of salt.

Some people like to add a hint of mint or a splash of lemon juice. The lemony version, in particular, is bright, zesty, and wonderfully hydrating—and personally, I find it especially delightful on hot days. I just love the tanginess!

Now, this drink isn’t just delicious—it’s functional, too. Thanks to its blend of yogurt, water, and salt, Ayran helps replenish the fluids and electrolytes your body naturally loses through sweat, especially in the heat.

In that sense, it’s like the Middle Eastern cousin to sports drinks—only more natural and nourishing. And honestly? I’d take a cold glass of ayran over anything sugary and neon-colored, any day.

I was first introduced to Ayran at a young age by some of my Middle Eastern friends in Denmark. It’s a staple alongside kebabs, grilled meats, rice dishes, and warm bread. Over the years, it became a must-have for me, but for the longest time, I only ever bought it ready-made.

Then one day, I realized this is one of those straightforward things you can whip up at home in seconds. Not to mention, it’s incredibly affordable! These days, I almost always make it myself.

So, What Does Ayran Taste Like?

It’s cool, salty, and tangy, similar to kefir or buttermilk.

You’ll find similar drinks throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East, like Persian Doogh or North African Laban. For example, Yayık ayranı, the most traditional version of Ayran, is made by turning the sour liquid left after butter-making into a creamy, restorative drink.

The best part? You need just three ingredients: yogurt, water, and salt.

Let’s make some.

How Much Ayran Does This Recipe Make?

This recipe makes enough for one to two people, depending on how thirsty you are. It’s super easy to double (or triple!) if you’re making it for more.

That said, I recommend drinking it fresh. Ayran might keep for up to 24 hours in the fridge, but the texture and taste are best right after blending.

For that reason, I suggest making only what you need in the moment—and if you find yourself hooked like me (which you might!), it only takes a few minutes to whip up a fresh batch.

Equipment

  • Blender (optional)
  • Shaker – use if you're skipping the blender

Ingredients

  • 500 ml Greek yoghurt min. 10%
  • 300-400 ml cold water
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon juice optional

Instructions

  • Add ingredients to blender
Add yogurt, cold water, and a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of salt to your blender.
  • Blend until frothy
Let it whizz for about a minute, or until you see those soft, airy foam bubbles on top. That’s your sign your Ayran is ready.
  • Taste check
Give it a little sip. Too tangy? Too salty? Feel free to tweak the yogurt, water, or salt and blend again for a few seconds.
  • Serve and enjoy
Pour the Ayran into glasses and enjoy it right away while it’s cold and refreshing.

Notes

  • Lemon juice – I love adding a splash of lemon juice. It gives the Ayran a bit of acidity and a refreshing touch. Add as much as you like—I usually go for about a tablespoon per glass.

Customizing Your Homemade Ayran

Want to give your homemade Ayran a little twist? Try adding:

  • A pinch of dried mint for a cool, herbal kick
  • A splash of lemon juice if you like it extra zesty

These little tweaks can brighten things up while still keeping the vibe close to the classic. That’s the beauty of Ayran—it’s simple, flexible, and chill.

So play around, taste as you go, and make it yours. A minute later, you’ve got a glass of something refreshing, satisfying, and exactly right for the moment.

Extra Tips for the Best Homemade Ayran Experience

While the recipe is simple, a few small choices can really elevate the taste and texture. Here are my favorite tips for making the best homemade Ayran:

  • Choose the right salt. Kosher or sea salt dissolves easily and gives a clean, balanced flavor without overpowering the drink.
  • Use cold ingredients, especially the water and yogurt. The colder they are, the more refreshing your Ayran will be.
  • Pick a good-quality yogurt. I recommend using yogurt with at least 10% fat—it gives the drink that creamy, satisfying texture we all love. If the fat content is too low, it can turn out thin or watery. I love using plain Greek yogurt, but any natural, unsweetened yogurt will work.

In the end, it comes down to just a few quality ingredients, a simple mix, and a moment to enjoy something good. After all, it’s the little things that make it special.

Why This Homemade Ayran Recipe Is Worth Making

Simple, cooling, and made with intention, Ayran isn’t just another wellness trend—it’s a classic that remains perfectly relevant today. Here’s why:

  • Supports Digestion – Made with live-culture yogurt, Ayran can help soothe the stomach and support gut health after meals.
  • Replenishes Electrolytes – A small pinch of salt helps restore what your body loses through sweat, making it a natural companion for post-workout recovery or hot weather conditions.
  • Refreshing Balance – With its blend of water and yogurt, Ayran helps restore fluids and minerals to keep you steady.
  • Straightforward and Fast – No prep, no cook, or fancy gear. Stir or blend it, pour into a glass, and enjoy your Ayran straight away.

It’s the kind of everyday recipe that’s easy to make, easy to love, and always worth keeping on hand.

A Quick Note on Salt

Ayran is supposed to be a little salty, since that’s part of what makes it great for hydration and electrolyte balance.

However, if you’re watching your sodium intake or have concerns about blood pressure, it’s worth paying attention to the amount of salt you use. You can always start with a smaller pinch and adjust to taste.

And if you’re drinking Ayran regularly, it might be worth considering how much you’re consuming overall.

A Simple Way to Rehydrate

With around 307 calories per serving, Ayran is a great choice for replenishing fluids and electrolytes—especially after a workout or on a warm day.

My Favorite Ways to Enjoy Homemade Ayran

There are no wrong ways to enjoy a glass of Ayran—but it’s especially lovely alongside savory, hearty dishes. For example, here are some of my favorite ways to serve and sip it:

  • With kebabs, grilled meats, or roasted vegetables
  • Alongside rice dishes, bulgur, or warm flatbread
  • Paired with lentil soup or spicy stews to mellow the heat
  • As a refreshing reset after an intense workout
  • Or, honestly, just on its own—straight from the glass on a warm day

However you serve it, let it be simple, satisfying, and exactly what you’re craving. If you love chilled, tangy drinks, you might also enjoy my Danish koldskål — a creamy buttermilk dessert that’s just as refreshing on a hot day.
