Doma 도마 (Sliema)

Andy and I love going on spontaneous dates whenever we have time. In my opinion, a great date doesn’t have to blow up a budget or empty your hard-earned savings. 

Recently, I was introduced to Korean food and instantly fell in love with its flavours. Soooo tasty! Fortunately, we discovered a hidden gem, Doma 도마, which is literally just around the corner from where we live.

Our Date Experience During a Busy Time

We arrived during a very hectic time, encountering quite a long wait even to place our order. Hence, my expectations were super low from the start, thinking it might be a tourist-trap due to the wait time and the popular area.

While waiting, we enjoyed some refreshing lemon soju.

Worth the Wait: Delicious and Affordable Korean Food

Despite the wait, the food was definitely worth it. It was my first time trying Ramen and Gimbap, which I can best describe as Korean sushi.

The Ramen was delicious, and there was so much food for one person. The Gimbap was decent, though it might just be a taste preference. Luckily, there are many other things to pick from on their menu for next time, and their Kimchi was super tasty. If you’ve never tried Kimchi, you’re truly missing out.

Best of all? This gigantic main course was only €16 per person. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Rating Doma 도마: Hospitality Matters

I would rate this place 3.5 out of 5! They will get their last star from me when they improve their level of hospitality.

The food was lovely, but a one-hour wait without proper communication from the waiters cannot be justified. Nonetheless, I would definitely love to go back and try some of their other dishes. I’ve heard they have a nice Korean barbecue platter.

Sako Sushi (St. Julian’s)

Calling all sushi lovers! If you’re in St. Julians’ and craving sushi, head straight to Sako Sushi, located just across from the Love-sign monument.

During a casual stroll along the coast, we suddenly had a craving for sushi – it happens more often than you might expect, haha! That’s how we discovered Sako Sushi.

Enjoy a Simple and Affordable Sushi Date

The concept is straightforward: pick your spot and indulge in all-you-can-eat sushi until you’re satisfied.

Back in Denmark, I loved our fixed-price, eat-until-you-pass-out gatherings at running-sushi places. Haha, the amount of sushi I’ve eaten in my life is unreal!

Fixed Price Plates: A Great Budget Date for Sushi Lovers

At Sako Sushi, you pay a fixed price per plate from the chef’s creations, which are categorised by colour and range from €2.85 to €6.05 each.

It’s perfect for trying different sushi rolls without committing to a whole one. Imagine ordering an eight-piece roll only to find it horrible – yuck! Haha.

Sako Sushi is also ideal for light eaters or sushi first-timers.

Surprisingly Tasty Tofu Sushi

Their sushi is simply delightful, especially their salmon and tofu options. 

I’ve recently developed a newfound love for tofu – the tofu roll was absolutely delicious, despite my previous misconceptions about its texture. Sadly, I didn’t take a picture of that particular roll.

I want to emphasise that tofu is surprisingly delicious when prepared correctly.

Rating Sako Sushi: A Near Perfect Experience

I’d rate Sako Sushi 4 out of 5! It would earn a 5-star rating if they consistently offered all coloured plates. When I visit a running-sushi spot, I want all the options available, not just 75%.

Still, I’ll definitely return for more of their delicious tofu rolls – yummy and affordable!

Sunday In Scotland (Sliema)

When it comes to a simple yet enjoyable date, nothing beats a casual coffee outing with pastries. Sunday In Scotland has become one of my go-to spots for this exact reason.

The Best Croissants in Malta: A Wallet-Friendly Date Treat

Their coffee and cakes are consistently delightful, and they offer a great deal – €6 gets you a coffee and a croissant. Let me tell you something: Their croissants are simply delicious, boasting the perfect balance of layers and a soft, inviting centre. 

The raspberry croissant, in particular, is a standout! If you ask me, the best on the island.

Enjoy Homemade Chocolates and Cheesecakes

You’ll find Sunday In Scotland in Sliema, right by the seafront near Zara. It can get busy due to its proximity to ferry operations and shopping opportunities.

Despite the crowds, the service is attentive, and they offer an array of tempting treats. Don’t leave without trying their homemade chocolates and cheesecakes, especially the lemon one.

I personally believe that weekends are more enjoyable for a visit.

Rating Sunday In Scotland: Almost Perfect

I’d rate this place 4.5 out of 5! It would earn a top-score once they consistently kept their menu fully stocked. It’s disappointing when popular items sell out early in the day.

Nonetheless, their offerings are generally delicious, ensuring there’s always something delightful to choose from, even if your favourite item isn’t available.

I’m looking forward to my next croissant fix there – it’s a cosy spot perfect for a casual affordable date.
