The Vision Behind the Series

Our inspiration for this series came from hearing expats complain that Malta lacks nature. That’s simply not true. 

While it is true Malta has limited green spaces, there are beautiful oases scattered across the island. And honestly, considering Malta’s proximity to Africa, what were you expecting? 

Now, let’s dive into Mosta Valley, dear readers!

An Unplanned Mosta Valley Adventure

The first time I visited Mosta Valley was purely by chance. Having been in Malta for just two months, I used the Bumble app to connect with new friends. Every girl needs a girl gang, right? 

Thus I met up with a fellow expat, and we decided to explore Mosta, mainly to visit the renowned Mosta Rotunda.

Stumbling Upon Greenery

After touring the church, we wandered through Mosta and found ourselves on a bridge with an unexpected view of lush greenery. Like many others, I had assumed Malta was devoid of nature, but I was quickly proven wrong. 

Looking down from the bridge, my adventurous spirit ignited—I had to explore the valley below. The question was, how?

The Adventurous Path of Mosta Valley

We were fortunate to cross paths with a group of rock climbers who pointed us to a trail. Although we made it down, it wasn’t the adventure I had envisioned. 

Although my first visit to Mosta Valley was brief, it still offered a sneak peek of the lush surroundings. Fortunately, I’ve returned many times since, with each visit revealing more of its hidden beauty.

Exploring Mosta Valley Through Rock Climbing

Andy often calls me a dare-devil, and I have to admit, he’s not entirely wrong. I sometimes find myself stepping out of character, rarely saying no to new experiences. 

So, when the opportunity for a rock climbing course arose, I didn’t hesitate. Brilliant or crazy? I’d say brilliant, as it brought me back to the incredible valley. 

On this occasion, I made it down to the bottom. What a feeling! Surrounded by towering cliffs, you realise just how small you are. Nature truly is a blessing.

A Climber’s Paradise

Mosta Valley is a climber’s paradise, offering a variety of crags to explore—105 to be precise. Perfect for both beginners and seasoned climbers. 

You can choose to take a course with an instructor, as I did, or venture out on your own if you’re an experienced climber.

The Value of a Climbing Partner

Despite my adventurous spirit, I wouldn’t recommend climbing solo. Having someone to guide you and provide comfort when fear creeps in is invaluable. 

Although I rarely back down from a challenge, I still get scared—sometimes to the point of hyperventilation. The moment you reach the top bolt, you feel invincible.

Conquering Your Fears

Getting down from a crag, though, is another story. Relying entirely on your instructor can be intimidating, but once you let go of your fears and trust the process, the experience becomes incredibly rewarding.

Climbing is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one—a truly psychological sport. But believe me, you can do it!

Mosta Valley Adventures

Even if you’re not into climbing, Mosta Valley is still worth a visit. One of my most memorable experiences in the valley came after a climbing session in January 2023. 

That winter brought extreme cloudbursts to Malta, with unusually cold temperatures from January to March. The heavy rains caused significant disruption across the island, but they also brought an unexpected blessing. *Insert holy-sounds*.

A Rare Sight: The Flowing River

Thanks to the abundant rainfall, the river in Mosta Valley flowed for the first time in years. Malta’s climate is usually very dry, so this was a rare and special event. 

I felt incredibly grateful to witness it. Sitting there, sipping my coffee, with the soothing sound of flowing water in the background, was a peaceful experience. 

Naturally, I couldn’t resist getting as close as possible. The timing of my visit was simply perfect.

Unexpected Greenery

As I ventured deeper into the valley, I was astonished by what I found—pine trees and daffodils! Shocked and amazed,I realised that Malta truly does have green spaces, filled with lush vegetation.

I was so taken aback that I instantly called my grandmother on FaceTime. Pine trees are quite common in Denmark, particularly the softer, silkier type. In Denmark, making Christmas decorations with pine and fir cones is a cherished tradition.

Finding Home Abroad in Mosta Valley

That experience showed me that you can find the feeling of home wherever you are, as long as you open your heart to the experience. Had I not dared to explore further, I would have missed this. 

Though this example is simple, the message remains clear. In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take. It might sound cliché, but it’s undeniably true.

A Gem by the Crags

As I prepared to leave, I took a moment to appreciate the Chapel of St Paul the Hermit, a tiny chapel right next to the crags. It’s a true hidden gem. 

Though I haven’t visited inside, I’ve been told you can access it during Malta’s numerous feasts.

A Memorable Solo Adventure

Walking through Mosta Valley remains one of my favourite solo experiences in Malta, despite my feet being soaked when I finally made it back up. 

The flowing river had temporarily erased all paths, which I hadn’t anticipated. Even if you can’t time your visit with a cloudburst, this place is definitely worth exploring.

To embark on this hiking adventure, you can start at Cat’s Arches Climbing Site or MTG Point, near Mosta Bridge.

For a tougher challenge, begin at Cat’s Arches and head downhill. It’s quite demanding but achievable with proper footwear.

Choosing Your Pace

Prefer a more relaxed pace? Opt for my second suggestion (MTG Point). You might even want to bring a picnic for a cosy break. The choice is yours!
