Upper Barrakka Gardens (Valletta)
We begin with one of Mikki’s favourite scenic spots in Malta. Introducing Upper Barrakka Gardens!
This green sanctuary in the heart of Valletta offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s lively streets. With few green spaces on this side of Malta, a stroll in this park is always a treat, especially when the flowers bloom in March and April.
The best part? Entry to Upper Barrakka Gardens is completely free #winning.
A Panoramic View of Malta’s Historic Heart

Upon entering this beautifully maintained garden, you are greeted by a sweeping view of the Grand Harbour. The scene includes the impressive fortifications of Valletta and the ancient bastions of the Three Cities: Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua.
Picture the scent of blooming flowers as you stroll through the lush pathways, lined with statues and monuments, each telling stories of Malta’s rich history.
Upper Barrakka Gardens: A Blend of Beauty and History

Upper Barrakka Gardens offers a calm retreat from the iconic Siege Bell Memorial to the breathtaking views from the terrace, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Malta’s beauty and heritage.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
Before you plan your visit, here’s some advice. If you are sensitive to sudden loud noises, be sure to check the timetable for the Saluting Battery. This attraction, situated below the garden, fires cannon shots daily.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a bit of excitement, you might enjoy witnessing the cannon fire while you explore the garden.
Don’t forget to visit this charming garden. We promise it’s very Insta-friendly!
Mdina (Silent City)
Are you ready to explore a place that offers both breathtaking scenery and rich cultural heritage? Let us introduce you to Mdina, Malta’s ancient capital.
Discovering Mdina: Malta’s Timeless Capital

Located in the heart of the island, this fortified town seems frozen in time with its maze-like streets and historic architecture. Originally founded by the Phoenicians as Maleth, the city was later renamed Melite under the Roman Empire.
But why is it called Mdina today? After the Arab conquest of Malta in 870 AD, the city’s name was changed to Mdina, which means a town surrounded by a wall.
The Silent City: A Walk Through History

Today, Mdina is often referred to as “The Silent City,” exuding an enchanting atmosphere that transports visitors back to a bygone era. As you wander through its narrow alleys and under its stone archways, you’ll encounter centuries of history embedded in the walls of its palaces, churches, and grand residences.
From the sweeping views atop the bastion walls to the peaceful serenity of St. Paul’s Cathedral, every corner of Mdina holds a story waiting to be uncovered. Whether you’re exploring mediaeval wonders or simply enjoying the timeless charm of its winding streets, a visit to Mdina is a journey through Malta’s rich cultural history.

Our favourite spot is Bastion Square, where the panoramic views stretch across most of the island and invite you to soak in the greenery of the surrounding countryside.
Sweet Delights at Fontanella Tea Garden

Next to this breathtaking viewpoint is the charming Fontanella Tea Garden.
Before Mikki’s first visit to Mdina in 2022, a friend recommended Fontanella’s chocolate cake, claiming it’s the best on the island. For a chocolate lover, it was a must-try, and it did not disappoint #maltadessertbucketlist.
Since then, we’ve returned with family and friends, and can confirm that not only is the chocolate cake delicious, but the cheesecake is also fantastic.
If you visit Mdina, treating yourself to these mouthwatering desserts is a must.
Blue Grotto (Qrendi)
Have you ever dreamed of exploring sea caves? We have the perfect destination for you!
Blue Grotto, a stunning complex of sea caves on Malta’s southeast coast near Zurrieq, is a must-see. It’s one of the island’s top tourist attractions, drawing over 100,000 visitors annually.
The Beauty from Above and Below

Blue Grotto can be viewed from above at a coastal road viewpoint. Here, you can see the natural arch, various sea caves, and the small bird sanctuary island of Filfla.
While the view from above is spectacular, the real beauty lies within the caves.
Visiting the Caves

To explore the caves, head to the harbour of Wied iz-Zurrieq, just a short walk from the Blue Grotto Panoramic Viewpoint. Simply follow the street down to your right from the viewpoint.
At the harbour, the Blue Grotto Boat Service offers 20-25 minute tours through the caves for €8 per adult, with boats accommodating 8-10 people and life jackets provided.
The boat tour takes you along the coast and into several caves, including the massive natural arch visible from the viewpoint. While the views from above are incredible, experiencing the caves up close is unforgettable.
Inside, you’ll find a magical underwater world illuminated by various water colours, from purple to azure blue, depending on the time and natural light.
Despite the water’s depth, visibility is exceptional, allowing you to see the ocean floor about 8 metres below the surface.
Enjoying Blue Grotto and Its Surroundings

After your boat trip, consider swimming in the harbour area. Blue Grotto has something for everyone: hikes, viewpoints, swimming, and more. Even without a boat trip, you can enjoy the scenic views of the natural arch for free.
For the best experience, plan your visit in the afternoon. Take a late afternoon boat trip and then head to the Blue Grotto Panoramic Viewpoint before sunset.
This time of day has fewer visitors, and you’ll witness one of Malta’s most breathtaking sunsets. After seeing it, you’ll understand why Blue Grotto is a must-visit scenic spot. Enjoy!
Wied Babu (Żurrieq)
Here comes a spot for the daredevils! Tucked away in the idyllic countryside of Żurrieq is Wied Babu, a hidden gem perfect for those seeking rural beauty and peace in Malta.
The best part? Wied Babu is located right next to Blue Grotto, making it a great two-for-one adventure. How’s that for efficient exploring? #slay.
Finding the Hidden Valley

However, Wied Babu isn’t the easiest place to spot. To find it, head left from the Blue Grotto Panoramic Viewpoint and continue until you spot a ladder on the right side of the path.
Climb the ladder and let your adventure begin!
A Daredevil’s Paradise

Wied Babu offers a captivating landscape with its lush greenery, winding paths, and dramatic limestone cliffs.
It’s an excellent location for rock climbing if you have the right gear and are up for a challenge. The climbing spots vary in difficulty, but be cautious if you’re solo or lack proper equipment.
If climbing isn’t your thing, simply enjoy the relaxed beauty of the area. You can hike down to a secluded spot by the ocean, though the terrain is rugged and there’s no official trail.
Embrace the Adventure
Ready to embrace the challenge? Wied Babu promises an unforgettable experience in Malta’s untouched countryside.
Don’t forget to add this to your Malta bucket list! #daredevilforlife.

Ras id-Dawwara (Rabat)
Situated on the southwest coast of Malta near Rabat, the breathtaking cliffs of Ras id-Dawwara are a must-visit scenic spot.
Unlike many other places in Malta, Ras id-Dawwara isn’t busy or crowded. Its less obvious location makes it a hidden gem, offering a peaceful retreat away from tourist hotspots.
Stunning Cliffs and Coastal Walks

Known for its stunning natural beauty, rugged cliffs, and panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, Ras id-Dawwara also features a scenic coastal walk.
This walk provides visitors with the opportunity to admire the ocean, the islet of Filfla, and the surrounding countryside.
It’s a favourite among hikers and nature enthusiasts who enjoy exploring the rugged coastline and hidden coves.
Getting There

To visit Ras id-Dawwara, drive towards Migra l-Ferha in Mtahleb, which you can locate on Google Maps. There is plenty of parking available, or you can take a cab.
From there, locate Filfla and proceed towards the path that will take you closer to the islet. The initial part of this trail may be challenging due to a short but steep incline.
However, once you overcome this, the path becomes relatively flat and easy to follow, offering a relaxing walk with stunning cliff-edge and coastal views.
Continue south along the footpath, which extends all the way to Ras id-Dawwara (and beyond). This hike takes about 1.5 hours round trip.
Alternative Route and Sunset Spot

Alternatively, if you’re around Dingli Cliffs, head west, and you’ll eventually reach Ras id-Dawwara. However, this trek involves walking through private properties and various terrains. The properties close to the site allow trespassing, but only on foot.
The locals in the area are friendly and happy to help if any confusion arises along your hike.
Ras id-Dawwara also offers a great sunset spot in a peaceful setting, which we highly recommend including in your plans #sunsetseekers.
We’re sure you’ll love this scenic spot as much as we do!
